During Years 9, 10 and 11 pupils continue to study Mathematics, Science, English Language, English Literature, Personal and Social Education, and Physical Education. In addition they choose from a list of optional subjects including a Modern Foreign Language, Geography, History, Drama, Music, Art, Business Studies, Design Technology, Food Technology and Leisure and Tourism.
All of our GCSE teachers, no matter what subject they teach spend time together building pupil profiles. They look carefully at predicted grades, examination workloads, the timing of coursework assignments and other external pressures. This means we can avoid the common stresses and difficulties regularly cited by candidates up and down the country which include:
|
Other support is provided by teachers mentoring individual pupils and sitting down with them, on a half termly basis, to discuss progress. This helps to develop realistic goals and targets. Advice and assistance are offered where appropriate and parents are kept fully informed.
Making the right GCSE subject choices can be crucial to a young person’s future education and career prospects. That is why we ask our pupils to make these choices only after they have had detailed discussions with parents/guardians and teachers about what is involved in the study of individual subjects. To assist in helping your son/daughter to make these important decisions, we ask you to download the GCSE Booklet. Please note the GCSE Booklet for current Year 8 students is being compiled and will be available shortly..
A Year 8 options evening is also held to enable pupils and parents to discuss issues with relevant teaching staff before decisions are made.
