Gifted and Talented

Gifted and Talented students are initially identified in Year 7, or on joining the school, by results of Nfer tests and teacher assessments.  The special abilities and interests of these students are therefore nurtured and encouraged throughout their time at Sherrardswood.

Gifted and talented pupils are recognised in every subject and are set appropriate challenges and extension work, both within the lessons and in homework tasks, which further stretches them and develops their learning and enthusiasm.  The student’s progress is also monitored closely by the Gifted and Talented Coordinators to ensure that they are fulfilling their potential.

We run workshops in different subjects, both curriculum based and career orientated.  In recent years we have run a Maths Workshop yearly, an English workshop, Architecture and D&T/Engineering days.  Sherrardswood also participates in National Competitions in Mathematics (at all senior Key Stages); both on site and at other schools; competitive Public Speaking and Spelling Bee events.  We regularly reach second and final rounds in such events.

All these extra activities serve to enrich the students thinking skills, subject knowledge and also the students get to work with gifted students from other schools, which builds confidence and fosters their competitive spirit.

For talented students, we offer a wide range of exciting extra curricular clubs which they are encouraged to attend. These have included Drama and Performance clubs, Music Bands, Art Club, Young Engineers, and numerous PE and Games events, depending on the interests and particular talents of each group of students.  Staff are always open to new ideas and we even had a Nintendo DS “Brain Training” club last year. We also run a mind gym, encouraging high level thinking skills, a Maths Club and a book club, run by the English department, for talented English students.

Parents are kept closely informed of the extra activities that are organised and details of summer camps and external activities, run by other organisations, are always passed on as they become available.
