Key Stage One

A typical morning for Key Stage One classes will involve Numeracy and Literacy sessions in small group work with adult supervision. Topic work, Science, Geography or History take place in the afternoon, as do swimming and games.

Your child’s progress in all areas is assessed regularly through teacher-led, informal assessments, rather than formal testing. After looking at a child’s level of attainment in the curriculum, we decide whether extra help is required to meet the necessary standard. At this point we may also decide on extension or enrichment activities for high achievers.

Children are grouped by ability for Mathematics (numeracy) and for some aspects of their English (spelling and comprehension for example).

We make use of specialist teachers from other key stages to teach French and Games and Key Stage One teachers regularly swap classes to fully utilise their own specialist skills, such as Music, Science, ICT and CDT.

Sherrardswood School offers a wider and more varied Key Stage One curriculum than may be available in other schools and regular diagnostic assessment is a major part of our work.

We do not consider it necessary or appropriate for our Key Stage One pupils to take part in SATs tests. The main reason for this decision is that we are particularly keen to avoid placing undue stress on such young children. However, as a parent of a child in Key Stage One, you will still receive teacher assessment results on your child's end of year report.

Parent Consultation Evenings are held in November and March at which time you can discuss your child’s progress in detail.

Sherrardswood School’s ‘open door’ policy means that you are most welcome to speak to your child’s teacher at the beginning and end of any school day.
