Key Stage Three

The beginning of secondary school is an important step in every young person’s life. For some of our Year 7 pupils at Sherrardswood School this means a new start in a new school. For those moving from our Junior School into Senior School it is an exciting new stage in surroundings and an environment already familiar to them.

To all pupils in Key Stage Three we offer a broad, balanced and stimulating curriculum, delivered by a dedicated team of teachers.

There are usually 2 teaching groups in each form at Mimram House. Teachers use a range of teaching methods according to learning needs and they monitor individual progress very closely. This is communicated to you on a regular basis through reports, formal consultations, letters and conversations. Parents are most welcome to contact teachers, form tutors and a pastoral leader at any time.

From Year 7 pupils will study a wide range of subjects from within and beyond the National Curriculum guidelines.

These include English, Mathematics, Science, French, Geography, History, Personal and Social Education, Design and Technology, Food Technology, Art, Music, Drama, Information Technology, Physical Education and Games.

In Year 7, pupils have study skills lessons.

In Years 8 and 9, students also study German.

In Year 9, pupils take end of Key Stage SATs tests in English and Mathematics. Since September 2006, Year 9 start the GCSE syllabus for Science at the beginning of Year 9.

Teaching and learning in Key Stage Three is supported by a full range of facilities. These include a large Sports Hall, a fully-equipped ICT Suite, purpose-built Food Technology and Design Technology rooms. We have high-speed broadband internet access throughout the school and we encourage pupils to use the most up-to-date methods of investigative research.

Our teachers are trained specialists in their subjects and they attend regular training courses to update their knowledge and skills. Every teacher works as part of a whole school team and develops a detailed knowledge of your child's progress across all of his or her subject areas.
