Learning Support

In the Learning Support Department we work with pupils who may, for various reasons, find it difficult to achieve their personal best. We encourage pupils to develop strategies to overcome barriers and to become more independent learners.

Our pupils come to us with a range of learning needs and through careful assessment and the use of existing information; we devise individual schemes to help support them, both in and out of the classroom.

Where appropriate, pupils with special needs will be placed on the Special Needs Register and Individual Educational Plans will be drawn up by Specialist Support Teachers in consultation with the students, subject staff and parents.

We support pupils in a number of ways, for example:

Students may receive support in class to help them fully access the curriculum.

Students may be withdrawn from some lessons for small group help (occasionally 1-1) with basic literacy and numeracy skills.

We are also able to offer specialist dyslexia support with multi-sensory approaches.

Mentoring may be used to support students who have organisational, emotional or transitional issues. As well as working with pupils with specific learning difficulties, we support students who are under achieving and, working closely with subject staff, students and parents, implement short term targets to get them back on track.

Short term support may be given to pupils who are facing particular problems such as issues with course work when moving into Key Stage 4. We believe that every child matters and we strive to develop a positive attitude towards learning which helps students to develop the skills and confidence they need to succeed.
