Reception

We believe that your child’s first year at school should be full of enjoyable, challenging and focused activities. This outlook enables us to get the best from each child, and it shapes our thinking in Reception.
We plan our termly topics carefully to make sure that each child has the opportunity to access the Early Years Foundation Stage National Curriculum in ways that are most appropriate to them. We adopt this flexible approach to ensure that your child is happy and fulfilled at school and then ready to move onto the next stage in his or her learning.
At the beginning of each term we let you know what work your child will be covering, this enables you to support and encourage your child’s learning at home.
In addition to daily Literacy and Numeracy, your child will also experience child initiated play opportunities involving large and small construction toys, sand and water experimentation, art and design creative opportunities and outside play. These sessions help to develop your child’s fine and gross motor skills and they support and extend his or her progress across the curriculum areas.

Your child will be continually assessed in all areas of the curriculum over the year. The evidence for these assessments is taken from observation notes, discussion with the child and adults and work sampling. In both the Autumn and Spring terms you will be formally invited to a Parents’ Evening where you can discuss your child’s progress and look through their work. At the end of the Summer term your child will receive a personal report which covers general progress and achievement over the year.
Sherrardswood School has an ‘open door’ policy. This means that as a parent you are most welcome to speak to your child’s teacher at the beginning and end of any school day.
