My SSS Week

by George Gaunt 3D

Thank you for a brilliant week

It really was a brilliant week

I loved the sleepover

I loved the Zoo

And I loved going to Bekonscot too

It was fun at Pizza Hut and the BBQ

And I liked the cooking in the big school

The soccer skills bit was great

And being a badger with my friends was cool

But best bit of all is that I was at school!

Friday 21st May

Year 2 visited Stanstead Mountfitchet Castle on Friday. The weather was beautiful and the children had a really enjoyable

day. They went back in time to find out what life was like living in a castle 1000 years ago. They were able to try on armour,

have a go at the grinding wheel and even sat in the stocks.

Monday 24th May

All of Year 1 headed to Cuffley Camp for a day of outdoor activities. They hunted for animal clues to help discover

how many different animals there were. They went for a walk in the woods and found some deer tracks and listened

carefully to the sounds around them. After lunch the children all took turns pond dipping and found some newts,

water boatman, leeches and dragonfly larvae. The children then split into groups to make Environmental Art based on

the work of Andy Goldsworthy. All the children had a great time and even managed to stay fairly cool in the shaded woods!

KS1 Maths went up a gear or two when Miss Fulford, Head of Maths in Mimram, came to Stannard Block to work some

Maths Magic. The children had great fun working out some great challenges.

Our Year 3 pupils have enjoyed a sunny first day with a visit from the East of England Ambulance Service.

They have been able to see and test the equipment inside the ambulance and practice some first aid on their friends!

The Parachute game has enabled the children to continue outdoor activities.

Our Year 7, 8 and 9 students are enjoying a Roman Times theme for Curriculum Enhancement Week this year,

and have spent the day producing pages from newspapers and Latin signage in School.  They have also visited

Welwyn Roman Baths this afternoon.

Tuesday 25th May

The Year 3 'Stay-cation' continued in earnest late Monday as the children enjoyed dinner at Pizza Hut, before staying the

night at school in the Ballroom (well done Miss Day, Mrs Nolan, Mrs Cox, Mrs Hartwig!).  Our recently launched Breakfast

Club enabled all children to start the day with a good breakfast ready for scavenger hunts, sewing and cooking with

Mrs Blake in the Senior School.

Senior students have continued their studies of the Romans with a Geography workshop looking at Rome, Roman Baths and

Roman towns.  Our Year 9 students have enjoyed a team building day at Celtic Harmony.

Wednesday 26th May

At the halfway point of the week, our Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 pupils have enjoyed a sunny morning and picnic lunch,

followed by parachute games, dancing and an outdoor story.  The Year 3 group spent the day at Bekonscot Model Village.

Our senior students experienced a varied day of activities as part of their Roman Week; food preparation and dyeing fabrics, pottery based

on Roman designs.  The highlight of the day was a visit from David Raymer, an archaeologist from Oxford University who brought in a number

of historic finds including; real gold Roman coins, bronze and iron age swords.  The students were also able to use metal detectors (worth £1,000 each!)

to do their own detective work around the school grounds.

Thursday 27th May

Key stage one pupils ventured to the library in Welwyn Garden City by train.  Great excitement for all children who were able to purchase

their own train ticket and select a book to take out from the library.

Year 3 enjoyed another varied day with a range of outdoor activities including; Brazilian soccer skills, cheerleading, rounders and problem

solving - The Great Egg Drop, Human Knot and Crossing Crocodile River!

Year 7 and 8 students were challenged with a Maths and Marketing day, whilst the Year 9 students had a choice of activities; ancient

metalwork techniques, jewellery making and glass making/fermentation process.

Friday 28th May

The week ended for senior students with a performance of Julius Caesar from the Year 9 English students and an exhibition of

all the work produced during the Roman themed week.

Our Year 3 class rounded off their Stay-cation with a trip to Whipsnade Zoo and a great time was had by all!  Pupils were

also able to make some lovely photo frames when they spent time with Mrs Campbell in the Design and Technology room

in the senior school.
