Sherrardswood Nursery offers your child a unique opportunity to remain in a familiar and secure environment from the age of two until they are ready to start school.
Key to our work in the Nursery is an appreciation of each child’s gifts, strengths and needs. Children explore and grow at different rates and in different ways, and our nursery curriculum is differentiated to meet those individual needs. We celebrate every child’s efforts and praise is at the very centre of our philosophy.
As a parent you will receive regular information and updates about what your child is doing and how they are progressing. As at all other levels in our school, we greatly value your input and feedback.
Play forms the basis of learning in the Nursery. We regard outdoor play as very important to a child’s development, so we plan these activities with as much care as those which take place inside the building.
We provide an outdoor play session each day and every child is expected to participate. The outdoor area has been developed into an attractive and stimulating garden with these four main areas:
The Living Willow house provides a quiet area
The climbing apparatus promotes active, physical learning and development
Our Garden simulates exploration and investigation
Our playhouse encourages role play and creative development
The Nursery is open Monday to Friday during term time and we offer 10 sessions over the week with an optional hot lunch the term after they turn three years old. Parents can choose the sessions you wish your child to attend or children may stay all day which will includde a hot lunch.
Hedgehogs
2-3 year olds (9.00am-12.00pm/12.30pm-3.30pm)
Children can join the Hedgehogs in the September after their 2nd birthday. During each three hour session the the younger children are offered a range of basic experiences. They meet other children and have a variety of play opportunities.
We suggest that the children attend at least 3 morning sessions per week. There is a high ratio of staff to children to accommodate their needs - 1:4 and this may rise to 1:5 in the Summer term. Children can have a free hot lunch from the term after they turn three years old, or if they are staying all day.

Badgers 3-4 year olds (9.00am-12.00pm or 12.45pm with a hot lunch/12.30pm-3.30pm) Children can join the Badgers in the September after their 3rd birthday. This session is designed to prepare the children for their transition and entry to full time school. The curriculum is stimulating and challenging. Children are encouraged to attend the five morning sessions to ensure they gain the most from our pre-school provision. The ratio for this setting is 1:8. All Badgers can choose to leave at 12.00pm or stay until 12.45pm for a free lunch. If they are staying all day a free hot lunch is provided.
Afternoon Session 2-4 year olds (12.30pm-3.30pm) Children from both the Badgers and Hedgehogs are welcome to join our afternoon sessions. These sessions will build on the learning experiences from the morning sessions. There are opportunities for the children to rest during the afternoon if necessary. The ratios for these afternoon sessions will relate to the age of the child attending. For those children attending Sherrardswood Nursery all day, we provide a free hot lunch.
Nursery Morning Club is available to all children, starting at 8.30am and it runs Monday through to Friday.
The Nursery Afternoon Club starts straight after the afternoon session at 3.30pm and runs through until 5.30pm.
