Enrichment Programme

Beyond academic pursuits, Sherrardswood recognises the importance of holistic development. We help each individual student to build up a range of skills to equip them for life after school appropriate to their personality and ambitions.

Building Personal Skills

All Sixth Form students are provided with invaluable opportunities to cultivate their leadership skills and boost their confidence by acting as role models to younger students, thereby creating a stronger sense of community within the school.

In Year 12, students are encouraged to become Prefects, whilst in Year 13, they have the chance to become Senior Prefects. We actively promote collaboration between our Sixth Form students and their younger peers, encouraging them to serve as mentors and assist Year 7 and 8 students in improving their literacy and numeracy skills. For those with creative inclinations, they can design and maintain notice boards throughout the school, as well as creating invitations for our highly anticipated Summer and Winter balls!

All our students have the chance to leave their own legacy behind by promoting an issue or subject they are passionate about. Whether it’s running a club, arranging a competition, mentoring younger students one-on-one, or delivering assemblies, our Sixth Form students have a wide array of avenues to sharpen their skills.

ISI Report 2023 - Pupils have a markedly strong sense of community and are highly supportive of each other.

Team Building Skills

Every year begins with the mixing up of Year 12 and 13 and setting them a team building task such as an ‘egg drop’ or building and sailing a mini raft. Our annual pantomime is a further opportunity for students to work together in teams to produce props and scenery, as well as working to a tight budget and timetable to get everything set up. Potential Head Boys and Girls often emerge from this activity, as some quickly develop skills of diplomacy and compromise to get a job completed.

ISI Report 2023 - Pupils engage actively in collaborative tasks and take leadership in their learning when they are given the opportunity to do so.

Independent Learning Skills

The Extended Project Qualification (EPQ) offers students the opportunity to develop and enhance a wide range of skills. Students learn how to identify reliable sources of information, evaluate data, and develop coherent arguments. It encourages independent learning and research skills, enabling students to get a glimpse of life at university.

Careers

Students are encouraged to research their potential career thoroughly using Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCS), published research, and work experience. This enables them to be able to communicate their passion in their personal statements and job applications.

With engaging talks from past students, parents, and industry experts, students can ask questions and learn more about their interests. Additionally, students can undertake work experience in their chosen field, with full flexibility allowed from either one day per week to one week in June. Recently, we have had placements in city firms, M&S HQ, stroke rehab centres, and working alongside GPs!
