About Sherrardswood School

Sherrardswood is a small, welcoming, co-educational school for pupils aged 2–18, set within beautiful woodland surroundings in Welwyn. Our community is rooted in trust, kindness and aspiration.

Families choose Sherrardswood because our teaching is thoughtful, our pastoral care is exceptional and our staff are genuinely valued, supported and encouraged to flourish.

About the Role

The practical dimension of DT is hugely important at Sherrardswood, and the DT Technician plays a central role in ensuring lessons run smoothly, safely and creatively. Working closely with our DT Teacher, you will help maintain an inspiring workshop environment where ideas can take shape and students can experiment with confidence.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Preparing, organising and setting up materials, components and equipment for lessons.
  • Supporting pupils during practical activities where appropriate.
  • Ensuring all machinery, tools and equipment are well maintained and safe to use.
  • Managing maintenance schedules and arranging servicing or repairs.
  • Upholding rigorous Health & Safety standards across the workshop.
  • Monitoring stock, ordering materials and managing supplier relationships.
  • Keeping the DT spaces tidy, organised and conducive to effective learning.
  • Working collaboratively with teaching staff to support lesson delivery and department development.

This role requires someone who is methodical, accurate and unflappable, and who takes pride in maintaining a smooth-running, high-quality practical environment.

About You

We are looking for someone who combines technical skill with professional reliability and a passion for supporting young people’s practical learning.

You will bring:

  • Experience working as a DT Technician or in a similar technical role, either in education or industry.
  • Strong working knowledge of Health & Safety regulations in a workshop environment.
  • Confidence operating and maintaining a range of machinery, tools and materials.
  • Excellent organisation, time management and attention to detail.
  • A proactive, positive approach and the ability to remain calm in a busy environment.
  • Strong communication skills and the willingness to work collaboratively as part of a small, supportive team.
  • A commitment to creating a safe, productive and inspiring learning space.

Why Join Sherrardswood School?

Working at Sherrardswood means joining a community that genuinely values its staff and celebrates its students. You can expect:

  • Small classes and the freedom to teach creatively.
  • A warm, supportive environment where colleagues collaborate and innovate.
  • A strong focus on professional development and career growth.
  • Free daily lunch, on-site parking.
  • A wellbeing and wellness programme.
  • Life assurance (3x annual salary).
  • Company pension scheme.
  • A generous Refer-a-Friend Scheme.
  • A school culture built on respect, curiosity, and ambition.

This is a place where staff feel part of something meaningful — and where your contribution will truly matter.
